2025 Mashujaa Day Heroes and Heroines — Full List

Mashujaa Day (Heroes’ Day), is a national holiday in Kenya celebrated on October 20th. It honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the country’s struggle for independence, and post-independence development. Initially known as Kenyatta Day, it was renamed following the 2010 Constitution, broadening recognition beyond political figures to include everyday heroes in various sectors like sports, arts, and philanthropy. The day is marked with nationwide celebrations, speeches, and awarding of honors to deserving citizens. 2025’s Mashujaa Day celebrations were held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.

The mandate for compiling the annual list of heroes and heroines is with the National Heroes Council. The aim of the lists, and the celebrations, is to serve as a reminder of Kenya’s history, unity, and continued pursuit of nation-building.  Nominations are open to all Kenyan citizens, usually announced by the council around June/July each year.

NB: Recognized heroes may receive medals, certificates, and public recognition, but there is no standard practice of awarding cash.

Certain heroes who have made notable contributions may receive government support in other forms, like housing, healthcare, or educational opportunities, though this is not guaranteed or uniform across all honorees. Financial assistance can sometimes be provided on a case-by-case basis depending on the hero’s personal circumstances or their specific contribution.
