Abdul Haji

Abdul Hajia Kenyan businessman, gained national and international recognition for his heroic actions during the Westgate Mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya, on September 21, 2013. The attack, orchestrated by the Somali militant group Al-Shabaab, involved heavily armed terrorists storming the upscale mall, resulting in the deaths of at least 67 people and injuring over 200. In the face of this tragedy, Haji emerged as a symbol of courage and selflessness.

The son of Mohamed Yusuf Haji, a prominent Kenyan politician and former defense minister, Abdul Haji was at a meeting when he received a distressing text message from his brother, trapped inside Westgate Mall. Without hesitation, he armed himself and rushed to the scene, not only to rescue his brother but to help others in danger.

Haji, who had experience with firearms from his security training, quickly joined police and other armed civilians in entering the mall. He played a critical role in rescuing dozens of people, guiding them to safety amidst the gunfire and chaos. One of the most memorable moments captured by photographers was Haji helping to rescue a young girl, Portia, who was brought out of hiding by her mother. The image of Haji, crouched and beckoning the terrified child to run towards him, became an iconic symbol of hope and bravery during the attack.

Haji’s actions during the Westgate siege were hailed across Kenya and internationally. His heroism highlighted the importance of ordinary citizens stepping up in times of crisis and reinforced a sense of unity among Kenyans, who were deeply affected by the attack. Following the event, Haji downplayed his role as a hero, stating that he was simply doing what any other person would have done in that situation.

His actions have had a lasting impact in Kenya, both symbolically and practically. Abdul Haji’s bravery during the attack inspired many and contributed to a broader conversation on national security, the role of civilians in emergencies, and resilience in the face of terrorism. Haji went on to pursue a career in public service, and in 2021, he was elected as a Senator for Garissa County. His leadership, both during the Westgate attack and beyond, continues to inspire a sense of courage and collective responsibility among Kenyans.
