Captain Daudi Kibati

Captain Daudi Kimuyu Kibati was a distinguished Kenyan pilot, who earned recognition for his remarkable career both in the Kenya Air Force and later with Kenya Airways (KQ). Born in Maliku, Kitui County, he grew up in a rural area that instilled in him a sense of discipline and service.

Kibati’s career in aviation began when he joined the Kenya Air Force (KAF). As a young officer, he rose to the rank of Major, demonstrating exceptional skills and dedication to his role. His time in the military was marked by a commitment to excellence and a drive to develop his flying capabilities. His military experience gave him a strong foundation in aviation, which he later built upon as a commercial pilot.

Upon retiring from the military, Captain Kibati joined Kenya Airways (KQ), one of Africa’s leading airlines. He was appointed as a captain, flying various long-haul routes across the world. His professionalism and deep understanding of aviation contributed to his respected status in the industry. Kibati became known for his ability to handle difficult situations with calmness and expertise.

One of his most notable achievements came in March 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the global crisis led to the grounding of most commercial flights, Captain Kibati took on a critical mission for Kenya Airways. He was the captain of the final repatriation flight from New York to Nairobi on March 25, 2020. This flight was vital in bringing Kenyan nationals back home as many were stranded abroad due to international travel restrictions. It was a courageous and selfless act, especially given the uncertainty of the pandemic.

However, after the successful flight, Captain Kibati went into quarantine and tragically tested positive for COVID-19. Despite receiving medical attention, he passed away on April 1, 2020, becoming one of the many frontline workers who lost their lives to the virus. His death was met with an outpouring of grief from the aviation community and the Kenyan public.

Captain Kibati’s legacy lives on, remembered for his professionalism, dedication, and sacrifice. His final flight, which helped bring many Kenyans back home during an unprecedented crisis, stands as a testament to his selfless service. His life exemplified a career built on integrity, courage, and a commitment to his country and profession.
