Catherine Kasavuli

Catherine Kasavuli was a trailblazing Kenyan journalist and news anchor, celebrated as the country’s first female TV news presenter. Born in 1962, she entered the media world in 1980 at the age of 18, beginning her career as a continuity announcer at the Voice of Kenya (later KBC). At a time when journalism in Kenya was male-dominated, Kasavuli’s confidence, professionalism, and graceful delivery on screen broke barriers and redefined what was possible for women in broadcast journalism.

Her career spanned over three decades, during which she worked with Kenya’s leading media houses, including KBC, KTN, and Citizen TV. In 1989, she became the first anchor at KTN, Kenya’s first privately owned television station, where her polished presentation style set a new standard for news delivery. Later, at Citizen TV, she continued to inspire audiences with her eloquence and warmth, earning her the affectionate title of the “TV Queen of Kenya.”

Kasavuli’s achievements went beyond her individual success. She opened the doors for countless women to enter journalism and broadcasting, proving that female voices could command authority and credibility in media. By mentoring young journalists, she nurtured a new generation of female anchors and reporters who continue to shape the industry today. Her pioneering role contributed significantly to normalizing women’s presence in primetime news, making her a symbol of empowerment and progress.
