Jamila Mohamed

Jamila Mohamed is a respected Kenyan journalist with over two decades of experience. Today, she serves as Managing Editor at Citizen TV, where she directs newsroom operations, story planning, and breaking-news coverage—a role she’s held since joining Royal Media Services in 2018.

Jamila’s unexpected entrée into journalism began in 2000 at IQRA FM, where she initially worked as a sales representative with no formal journalism training. Her first on-air moment arrived when a newsreader failed to show up—she stepped in, read her debut bulletin, and never looked back. Over the next 16 years, she has ascended through the ranks from field reporting, editor and now to her current position at Royal Media Services.

A trailblazer for women in media, Jamila has witnessed and championed the increasing presence of women in newsrooms. She often reflects on how rare female journalists once were and expresses deep pride in witnessing their rise in both numbers and performance. Her journalism spans across traditional and digital platforms, and she’s equally known for empowering aspiring journalists even without formal training—through a self-made career built on passion, persistence, and adaptability.

A highlight from her career includes a poignant environmental recall: In 2006, she reported on a nine-year-old girl who returned a found KSh 1,000 note—a gesture that sparked widespread community support, including education funding for the girl and her sibling.

Jamila has also been recognized for her storytelling, winning industry accolades and serving as a role model for young women. She’s lauded for her integrity and humility even as she has risen through leadership.

Famous Quote

Let your work speak for you. As long as you have a chance to prove yourself, every well-researched, well-thought-out, well-written piece that you put out there, don’t waste the opportunity. Do it like this is the only chance you have.
