Mary Khavere, popularly known by her stage name Mama Kayai, was born in 1940 in Majengo, Nairobi, Kenya. Raised in the vibrant and culturally diverse neighborhoods of Eastlands, she was introduced early to traditional music and performance art. Her passion for the stage grew from participating in community theater and traditional dances, which later led her to join the Black Golden Stars troupe in the 1970s. Though formal education details remain scarce, her life's work has been her greatest curriculum, offering generations of Kenyans laughter, values, and relatable storytelling.
Mama Kayai rose to national fame through her role in the long-running Vitimbi TV series, which aired on the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). Beyond acting, she mentored young artists, advocating for professionalism and cultural pride in the performing arts. Her influence extended to national celebrations, where she performed for presidents and dignitaries, further cementing her status as a national treasure.
In recognition of her immense contribution to Kenyan arts and culture, Mama Kayai received numerous awards, including a Head of State Commendation (HSC). Despite her fame, she remained humble and connected to her roots, always championing the role of women in storytelling and family life.
