Nyashinski
Nyamari 'Nyashinski' Ongegu is a celebrated Kenyan musician known for his versatile talent in both hip hop and contemporary Afrobeat music. He rose to fame in the early 2000s as a member of the pioneering Kenyan rap group Kleptomaniax, alongside Roba and Collo. The group was instrumental in shaping Kenya's urban music scene alongside contemporaries like E-Sir.
His group contributed to the popularization of ‘Kapuka’ music—a blend of hip hop and African beats. Their hits such as Tuendelee and Haree became anthems, helping the trio gain national and regional recognition. After Kleptomaniax went on hiatus around 2007, Nyashinski relocated to the United States, where he lived for almost a decade, focusing on personal development and remaining largely out of the public eye. His return to Kenya’s music scene in 2016 marked one of the most significant comebacks in Kenyan music history. With the release of his single ‘Now You Know,’ Nyashinski instantly regained his place in the industry. The song, which addressed his hiatus and the state of the music industry, was a huge success, rekindling interest in his career.
Nyashinski’s music is known for its thoughtful lyricism, blending themes of love, identity, and social issues. His ability to switch seamlessly between English and Swahili, as well as his use of Sheng (Kenyan slang), makes his music resonate with a broad audience. He followed ‘Now You Know’ with a string of successful singles, including “Malaika,” a love ballad that showcased his vocal range and versatility. His music often addresses both personal and societal issues, reflecting the realities of life in Kenya while maintaining a global appeal.
In 2020, Nyashinski released his debut solo album Lucky You, which further solidified his status as one of Kenya’s top contemporary artists. The album featured a mix of hip hop, Afrobeat, and R&B influences, reflecting his diverse musical background and appeal.
Nyashinski is not only celebrated for his musical talent but also for his humility and authenticity, traits that have earned him a loyal fan base. His ability to reinvent himself and stay relevant in the ever-evolving music industry is a testament to his creativity and passion for music. He remains one of Kenya’s most influential and respected musicians.
