Richard Turere

Richard Turere — also known as Lionboy — is best known for his creation of the “Lion Lights” system, a simple yet ingenious invention that has had a profound impact on wildlife conservation and human-wildlife conflict resolution. Turere grew up as a Maasai herder responsible for protecting his family's cattle from lions and other predators. At just 11 years old, he observed that lions would be deterred by moving lights, inspiring him to develop a solution that would keep lions away from livestock without harming them.

Using simple materials like solar panels, car batteries, and LED bulbs, Turere created a system of flashing lights that mimic a human presence, scaring away lions at night. The lights flash in a sequence that makes it seem like someone is walking around, thus preventing lions from approaching. The Lion Lights system not only protected his family’s livestock but also significantly reduced the need for lethal retaliation against lions, contributing to the conservation of these endangered animals.

Turere’s invention gained international attention and acclaim. He was invited to present his idea at the TED2013 conference in California, becoming one of the youngest speakers in TED history. His story of creativity, resilience, and commitment to finding peaceful solutions to human-wildlife conflict resonated worldwide, making him a symbol of how grassroots innovation can lead to significant environmental and social change.

Richard’s impact extends beyond his invention. He has inspired countless young people, especially in Africa, to think creatively about the challenges they face in their communities. He has become an advocate for youth empowerment and education, emphasizing the importance of practical problem-solving skills and innovation. Through his work, Richard has shown that solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems can come from the most unexpected places, even from a young boy tending cattle in rural Kenya.

Turere’s achievements have been recognized globally. He received the Anzisha Prize in 2018, which celebrates young African entrepreneurs making a difference in their communities. His Lion Lights project continues to expand, benefiting more communities and wildlife reserves across Kenya and beyond.
