Dr. Athman Ali is a Kenyan clinical oncologist determined to keep cancer treatment at home. He earned his MD from Kharkiv National Medical University, completed a radiation-oncology residency at Cairo University’s Kasr Al-Ainy Cancer Center, and finished internship rotations at Kenyatta National Hospital. Returning in 2018, he joined Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he helped commission Mombasa’s first public linear accelerator and train nurses in chemo-safety.

In 2021 he co-founded the Kenya Cancer Care Alliance, a non-profit that negotiates drug discounts, deploys mobile screening units, and funds travel stipends for rural patients. The alliance has screened 38 000 people and initiated 4 200 treatment cycles, cutting radiotherapy wait lists in partner facilities by forty percent.

Dr. Athman also leads “Tele-Oncology Kenya,” a platform linking provincial clinicians to multidisciplinary tumor boards in Nairobi and abroad; more than 900 virtual consults have refined care plans while saving families expensive trips to India.

Now pursuing a PhD in precision oncology through a University of Nairobi–Oxford partnership, he is piloting AI-based contouring software that halves planning time for radiotherapy. Off-duty he mentors medical students, runs triathlons, and campaigns for a national cancer registry law. His motto: quality cancer care knows no postcode.
