Angela Okinda
Angela Okinda is a Kenyan actuarial executive and the Managing Director & Principal Officer of Equity Life Assurance Kenya (ELAK), a subsidiary of Equity Group Holdings. Since taking the helm in 2021 she has turned the start-up into one of East Africa’s fastest-growing life underwriters. Assets under management have leapt from KES 3 billion to more than KES 20 billion, while active policies climbed to six million through bancassurance, agency, and mobile channels.
Okinda launched FlexiLife, a pay-as-you-go life cover, and AfyaIncome, an income-protection plan for freelancing workers. ELAK was named 2024 Group Life Company of the Year and won the Think Business Award for Best Use of Technology after posting a low loss ratio of 38 percent.
She holds a BSc in Actuarial Science from the University of Nairobi and is a Fellow of both the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and the Actuarial Society of Kenya. Earlier roles include Director of Pensions at Zamara Group—supervising KES 90 billion in retirement assets—and Head of Umbrella Solutions at Alexander Forbes.
Honours include the 2022 Rising Star Award in Financial Services and Business Daily Top 40 Under 40 Women. Okinda chairs Equity Group’s sustainability panel, mentors young actuaries, and advocates micro-pension legislation.
