Anthony Karimi Muthungu
Anthony Karimi Muthungu is a trailblazing Kenyan innovator and engineer whose passion for solving everyday problems began at the age of 13. His first experiment—creating biogas from a pit latrine to power light bulbs and a radio—ended abruptly after he was electrocuted and his father dismantled his invention. Yet that experience ignited an insatiable curiosity that continues to drive his innovative spirit today.
Now the CEO and founder of TotoSci Academy, Anthony is devoted to empowering children aged 7 to 17 with practical STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education. TotoSci integrates emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and blockchain into its learning model, having already reached over 1,200 students across Kenya. Through this initiative, Anthony seeks to prove that Kenya’s education system can nurture innovation—not just replication.
His inventions are deeply rooted in social impact. Among them are the Luam Blackspot Detector, which alerts drivers of accident-prone zones, and the AlexCane, a smart walking stick for the visually impaired that detects obstacles and transmits location updates to caregivers. Recognized internationally by Emory University and awarded by Advancing Healthcare Innovation Africa (AHIA), Anthony’s work has positioned him as one of Africa’s most promising young inventors dedicated to using technology for societal good.
