Augustine Njeru Kathangu

Njeru was feted for his exemplary contribution to political reforms that paved the way for the re-introduction of multi-partism in Kenya between 1984 and 1992. A courageous advocate for democracy, he endured great personal sacrifice in the fight for political freedoms. During this period, he faced repeated police arrests and brutal treatment, becoming one of the many victims tortured in Karura Forest, Nyati House, and the Nyayo House torture chambers for weeks.

In 1990, Njeru was arrested alongside other pro-democracy activists on accusations of treason, charges that were later reduced to sedition. He then underwent a gruelling one-year trial, which culminated in a 14-year prison sentence. Of this, he was ordered to serve seven years with hard labour. Despite the harsh conditions, his resilience remained unshaken, and he was eventually released after three years in 1992.

Following his release, Njeru transitioned from political activism to parliamentary leadership, serving as the Member of Parliament for Runyenjes Constituency from 1992 to 1997. His legacy remains a testament to the high price paid by reformists who fought for Kenya’s democratic space and the freedoms enjoyed today.
