Bonnie Okumu

Bonnie Okumu is a Kenyan corporate lawyer and governance strategist who serves as Director of Legal Services and Group Company Secretary at KCB Group PLC, East Africa’s largest banking conglomerate. With 17 years in financial-services law, she steers legal risk, ethics, and board governance for KCB’s eight subsidiaries across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Okumu was lead counsel on KCB’s landmark acquisitions of National Bank of Kenya (2019), Banque Populaire du Rwanda (2021), and Trust Merchant Bank DRC (2022), transactions that added KES 600 billion to the balance sheet and positioned the group as a ten-country powerhouse. She also guided the bank’s inaugural KES 30 billion green-bond programme and chairs the internal task force aligning KCB with IFRS Sustainability Disclosure standards.

A graduate of the University of Nairobi (LL.B.) and Strathmore Business School (MBA), Okumu is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, a Certified Public Secretary, and a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Secretaries. She sits on the boards of KCB Foundation and the Nairobi Securities Exchange Derivatives Market Steering Committee.

Celebrated for integrity and deal-making acumen, she was named to Kenya’s Top 25 Most Powerful Women in C-Suite (2022) and Business Daily’s Top 40 Under 40 Women (2023). Okumu mentors young lawyers through the Women on Boards Network and spends weekends hiking the Aberdare ranges with her two children.
