Brian Job Onyino

Brian Job Onyino is a Kenyan financial-markets innovator who has spent more than a decade turning complex risk into opportunity for East African investors. Trained in actuarial science at the University of Nairobi and certified as a Financial Risk Manager, he began his career on Barclays’ treasury desk before joining Equity Bank, where he launched the lender’s first FX options offering. A stint with the London Stock Exchange Group deepened his understanding of derivatives clearing and post-trade infrastructure, skills he brought home in 2020 when Absa Bank Kenya tapped him to set up its regional derivatives-structuring unit.

As East Africa Lead for Derivatives Structuring, Onyino designs currency, interest-rate and commodity hedges for corporates, pension funds and public agencies, overseeing a notional book that now exceeds US $2 billion. He was instrumental in Absa becoming the inaugural market maker on the Nairobi Securities Exchange’s NEXT derivatives board, and he co-authored the Central Bank of Kenya’s 2023 guidelines on over-the-counter hedging products.

Named to Business Daily’s Top 40 Under 40 Men list in 2019, Onyino mentors young quants through the CFA Society Kenya, lectures on derivatives regulation at Strathmore Business School, and advises the African Development Bank’s Risk Management Committee advancing his goal to place East Africa on par with global capital-markets hubs.
