Brian Job Onyino
Brian Job Onyino is a Kenyan financial-markets innovator whose career blends cutting-edge derivatives structuring with a passion for conservation. Trained in actuarial science at the University of Nairobi and certified as a Financial Risk Manager, he began his career on Barclays’ treasury desk before joining Equity Bank, where he launched and led the lender’s first derivatives desk. The initiative, which introduced currency, interest-rate, and commodity hedging tools to East African corporates, earned the 2018 Refinitiv East Africa Excellence Award for Innovation and positioned Equity as a market maker on the Nairobi Securities Exchange derivatives market.
His expertise was further sharpened at the London Stock Exchange Group, where he gained deep insights into post-trade infrastructure. In 2020, Absa Bank Kenya tapped him to establish its regional derivatives-structuring unit. Now serving as Head of Derivatives, Sales & Structuring, Onyino oversees a hedging portfolio exceeding US $2 billion, mentors a team of quantitative analysts, and co-authored the Central Bank of Kenya’s 2023 guidelines on over-the-counter products.
Beyond finance, he is a trustee of the Mara Elephant Project and co-founder of Ng’ombe Guardians, advancing data-driven wildlife protection. Named to Business Daily’s Top 40 Under 40 Men list in 2019, Onyino epitomizes how financial ingenuity can drive both economic growth and environmental stewardship.
