Dr. Josephine Kulea
Dr. Josephine Kulea is a passionate human rights defender transforming the lives of vulnerable girls and women from pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya. She works fearlessly to end harmful cultural practices that threaten the safety and future of girls.
As the founder and executive director of the Samburu Girls Foundation (SGF), Dr. Kulea has personally rescued over 2,000 girls from female genital mutilation (FGM), early marriages, and the “beading” practice a harmful tradition that exploits young girls. She collaborates with elders, local leaders, and government agencies to protect and educate the rescued girls, allowing them to rebuild their lives with confidence and dignity.
Dr. Kulea also engages communities through dialogue and advocacy to shift cultural mindsets. Her work has strengthened child protection systems and promoted equality across Kenya. She continues to mentor young women, ensuring they have access to education and leadership opportunities.
Her dedication has earned both national and international recognition. By standing firm against injustice, Dr. Kulea is redefining what it means to protect human rights in traditional societies. Her leadership continues to inspire communities to replace harmful customs with compassion, justice, and hope for future generations.
