Dr. Margaret Mwania
Dr. Margaret Mwania is a resilient and pioneering figure in Kenya’s field of nuclear medicine and diagnostic radiology. Originating from modest beginnings, she graduated among the top of her class from Moi University, driven by a personal passion to heal—sparked by watching her mother’s recurring illness.
She entered the prestigious Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology program at Aga Khan University (AKU), Nairobi, choosing it for its comprehensive training environment, well-equipped hospital setting, and advanced imaging technologies. During her residency, she was struck by a cancer diagnosis, which nearly halted her studies. Through steadfast determination, support from family and colleagues, and medical treatment—including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery—Dr. Mwania triumphantly completed her degree among a graduating cohort of 41 residents.
Her academic work includes a substantive thesis examining discordance between breast imaging and histopathology in ultrasound-guided biopsies, providing critical insight into diagnostic precision in cancer imaging.
Now in good health, Dr. Mwania serves as an instructor in the department of imaging and diagnostic radiology at AKU Hospital, Nairobi. She has embraced her role in PET/CT imaging, especially in cancer diagnostics—a field she once feared due to personal experience—and is preparing to pursue further sub specialization through fellowship training.
Through her perseverance, clinical contributions, and teaching, Dr. Margaret Mwania continues to inspire patients, peers, and aspiring medical professionals, advancing nuclear medicine in East Africa.
