Dunia Jarson Abdi
Dunia Jarso Abdi has carved a unique path in Kenya’s financial sector, embodying the transformative power of inclusive leadership. At only 24 years old, she became the Chief Executive Officer of Taqwa SACCO, the country’s first Shariah-compliant financial institution. Now 30, Dunia has spent the last six years steering the cooperative into a model of growth and impact, with a simple but powerful belief: real change begins when women and youth are supported.
Recognizing that women and young people often face barriers to accessing credit, Dunia designed and promoted tailored financial products that spoke directly to their needs. Many traditional lenders had overlooked these groups, but under her stewardship, Taqwa SACCO tapped into this potential, enabling thousands to pursue business, education, and community projects. Within just three years, membership expanded sixfold—from a modest base to over 13,000 members.
Her approach has not only fueled organizational growth but has also empowered communities, giving a voice to demographics that are often sidelined in mainstream finance. Dunia’s leadership at Taqwa SACCO highlights the role of ethical and inclusive financial models in driving sustainable development.
Her journey continues to inspire young professionals, proving that visionary leadership and inclusivity can reshape entire industries.
