Fiona Wanjiku Moejes
Dr. Fiona Wanjiku Moejes is a pioneering Kenyan environmental scientist and entrepreneur, leading innovative initiatives in research equity and coastal resilience. As CEO and Director of Programmes at the Mawazo Institute—a women-led platform supporting early-career female African researchers—she champions training, funding, and policy influence that empower women to develop solutions for local and global development challenges.
Armed with an industry-based PhD in microalgal biotechnology, Fiona also co-founded Mawimbi Ocean Innovations, which leverages a “Seaweed Farm-as-a-Service” model to support coastal communities, especially women and youth. By providing training, equipment, technical support, and guaranteed produce purchasing, her initiative increases income security and fosters sustainable livelihoods.
Fiona’s multifaceted impact extends to fostering marine conservation initiatives in Kenya and the Comoros and serving on international platforms like the Executive Committee of the International Society of Applied Phycology. Her leadership has earned her recognition as a Women for the Environment Africa Fellow and selection for the prestigious 2025 Tutu Leadership Fellowship—a testament to her vision-driven and collaborative approach to African innovation.
