Grace Anunda Ateka

Grace Anunda Ateka, 34 , has rapidly become one of Kenya’s most influential figures in physics and nuclear science, establishing herself as a trailblazer in a traditionally male-dominated fied. As Head of the Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), she leads critical work ensuring accurate measurement of radiation exposure—vital in medical diagnostics, cancer therapy, and industrial safety.

Grace’s journey began with a childhood aspiration to become a pilot, but guided by her father’s encouragement she embraced physics instead. Despite early fears about job prospects with a physics degree, she took a leap of faith—and it paid off. She earned a bachelor’s in Radiation Physics from the University of Nairobi, and is now pursuing her master’s in nuclear science.

Beyond her technical achievements, Grace is deeply committed to professional mentorship and gender inclusion. She serves as Secretary General of the Africa Association of Radiation Protection, Assistant Secretary for the Women in Nuclear Chapter, and participates in Eastern Africa’s women in basic sciences networks. In 2020 she coordinated an African team for an international conference presentation in Australia and won a Best Presentation Award in Measurements at a conference in Italy.

Grace emphasizes that being part of professional networks can open critical doors. She actively encourages young girls to embrace STEM careers and stay informed about global developments in nuclear science. Through her scientific leadership and advocacy, Grace Anunda Ateka is accelerating Kenya’s progress in nuclear science, while inspiring a new generation of women in STEM.
