Haji Galma Dido
Haji Galma Dido was a courageous leader who played a vital role in Kenya’s journey toward unity and independence. His service and commitment helped bring stability to the Northern region during a time of deep political tension and uncertainty. Through his leadership, he worked to protect Kenya’s sovereignty and promote peace among its diverse communities.
As a senior chief, Haji collaborated closely with Mzee Jomo Kenyatta to ensure that the Northern region remained part of the new Republic of Kenya. He believed that peace and cooperation were essential for national progress. In addition, he worked tirelessly to prevent the region from seceding to Somalia, advocating instead for unity and dialogue. His diplomacy and integrity earned him respect across tribal and political lines.
Haji was deeply dedicated to his people. He often traveled to remote areas to encourage peace and understanding among rival groups. Moreover, he led with fairness and courage, always choosing negotiation over conflict. Unfortunately, his mission of peace ended tragically when he was assassinated by Shifta rebels, alongside the first Isiolo District Commissioner, David Dabaso Wabera, while on a peace mission to Sericho.
Haji Galma Dido’s sacrifice remains a powerful reminder of the cost of peace and the strength of true leadership. His legacy continues to inspire Kenyans to value unity above division and to uphold justice even in times of danger. Through his vision and selflessness, he helped shape a more stable and united Kenya.
