Dr. Ibrahim Ondeko Matende
Dr. Matende was widely recognized for his remarkable contributions to the medical field, particularly in advancing eye care across Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa. Through his work with the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COECSA), he has played a pivotal role in transforming ophthalmic training by establishing a robust framework for professional development. His initiatives have ensured that eye care professionals are not only well-trained but also equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide high-quality care in diverse communities.
Beyond professional training, Dr. Matende has been a passionate advocate for trachoma treatment, focusing on grassroots interventions that target some of the most underserved populations. Recognizing the importance of specialized care for children, he also pioneered the first children’s eye clinic in the coastal region, offering critical services that were previously unavailable locally. Through these efforts, he has significantly reduced preventable vision loss among vulnerable populations and strengthened the healthcare system’s capacity to manage eye-related conditions.
