James Gitundu Kairo
Dr. James Gitundu Kairo, a Senior Researcher at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), was recognized for his outstanding efforts in mangrove restoration, a critical environmental initiative aimed at safeguarding coastal ecosystems. With a deep passion for marine conservation, he spearheaded the Mikoko Pamoja initiative, a groundbreaking, community-led mangrove conservation and restoration project in Gazi Bay, Kenya.
Through Mikoko Pamoja, Dr. James has worked closely with local communities to restore degraded mangrove forests, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable use of marine resources. The project not only rehabilitates mangrove habitats—vital for combating climate change, preventing coastal erosion, and supporting marine life—but also generates carbon credits. The revenue from these credits is reinvested into community projects such as clean water provision, education, and healthcare, creating a direct link between environmental conservation and community well-being.
His work has demonstrated how scientific expertise, community engagement, and innovative funding models can come together to create lasting environmental and social impact. By empowering local residents to become custodians of their natural resources, Dr. James has ensured that mangrove conservation in Gazi Bay is both sustainable and beneficial to present and future generations.
