James Kang’aru Mwangi

James Kang’aru Mwangi is a trailblazing Kenyan chess instructor and founder of Epitome School of Chess. Recognized as Africa’s youngest International Arbiter and FIDE Instructor, he has pioneered youth chess development across Kenya and the continent. Under his leadership, Epitome has trained over 4,000 individuals, producing multiple national and African champions. Mwangi has represented Africa in global chess forums and served as Chief Arbiter in continental competitions. His contributions earned him the 2024 Forty Under 40 Africa Achiever Award in the Sports category FIDE. Additionally, he was featured in Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 list in 2021 buzzcentral.co.ke. Through his work, Mwangi has elevated chess as a tool for youth empowerment, critical thinking, and social inclusion.​
