Joseph Mwasi Saruma

Joseph is celebrated for his outstanding contribution to the preservation and promotion of Taita cultural heritage through the founding of the traditional dancing group, Gonda Yabara Isanga. Driven by a deep passion for his community’s traditions, Joseph established the group to revive, safeguard, and share the rich cultural expressions of the Taita people, including their dances, music, and storytelling.

Under his visionary leadership, Gonda Yabara Isanga has grown into a respected cultural troupe, showcasing vibrant performances that reflect the rhythms, attire, and narratives of Taita traditions. Joseph has not only trained and mentored members of the group but has also inspired young people to value their heritage in an era of rapid modernization.

The group’s talent and dedication have earned them recognition beyond the Taita Hills. They proudly represented their culture at the UNESCO Cultural Competition, gaining international exposure and appreciation. Additionally, they have participated in the 47 Counties Cultural Festival, where they celebrated Kenya’s diverse heritage alongside other cultural groups from across the nation.

Through his work, Joseph has become a cultural ambassador, ensuring the Taita identity thrives, and creating a legacy of pride, unity, and cultural continuity for future generations.
