Joseph Towet

Joseph Towet was feted for his exceptional contribution to environmental conservation and community-led ecosystem restoration. In the aftermath of the 2007–2008 post-election violence, which saw the destruction of the Chepalungu Forest, Joseph demonstrated visionary leadership by founding the Chepalungu Apex Community Forest Association (CHEACOFA). Recognizing the urgent need to restore the forest and protect the local environment, he mobilized community members, local leaders, and other stakeholders to embark on a comprehensive reforestation and conservation initiative.

Under Joseph’s guidance, CHEACOFA has planted over 90,000 indigenous trees, transforming degraded land into vibrant, sustainable forests. These efforts have not only restored key biodiversity in Bomet County but also contributed to soil stabilization, improved water catchment areas, and enhanced the resilience of local ecosystems against climate change.

Beyond ecological restoration, Joseph has fostered community engagement and environmental awareness, encouraging local residents to take ownership of conservation initiatives and understand the value of protecting natural resources. His work has created opportunities for education, youth involvement, and sustainable livelihoods linked to forest management, demonstrating that conservation and community development can go hand in hand.

Through his dedication, vision, and tireless commitment, Joseph has become a leading figure in environmental stewardship, inspiring others to protect, restore, and sustainably manage Kenya’s vital natural heritage.
