Juma Mashanga
Juma Mashanga was recognized for his outstanding and long-standing contribution to environmental conservation, particularly through his tireless efforts in mangrove rehabilitation and restoration. Since 2007, he has dedicated himself to protecting and restoring the fragile ecosystem at Tsunza Creek, a vital habitat for marine life and a natural barrier against coastal erosion.
In the same year, he founded the ComTech Project, an environmental initiative aimed at mobilizing community members to actively participate in conservation work. Under his visionary leadership, the project has successfully planted over one million mangrove trees, transforming degraded areas into thriving ecosystems. These efforts have not only revived biodiversity but have also created livelihoods for local communities through eco-friendly activities such as beekeeping and eco-tourism.
Jumaa’s work has gone beyond planting trees; he has been a passionate advocate for environmental education, raising awareness about the critical role mangroves play in climate change mitigation and in supporting fisheries. His dedication has inspired many young people to take up environmental stewardship, ensuring the continuity of these vital efforts for generations to come.
Through his relentless commitment, Jumaa has become a symbol of grassroots action driving meaningful change for the planet.
