Kwayosa Jael

Kwayosa Jael is honored for her outstanding contribution to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, particularly within the Luhya community. She has played an instrumental role in documenting and safeguarding the traditions of the Isukha people, with a special focus on the iconic Isukuti dance. Her efforts in research, documentation, and advocacy were central to the successful nomination of the Isukuti dance to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) list in 2014, a milestone that placed the community’s cultural identity on the global stage.

Beyond the nomination, Kwayosa has continued to support and promote cultural festivals of the Isukha community, ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their roots. Through her initiatives, she has provided platforms for local performers and cultural custodians to showcase their talents, fostering pride and continuity of traditional practices. Her work has also contributed to increased recognition and appreciation of the Luhya culture within Kenya and internationally.

Kwayosa’s dedication reflects her belief that culture is a vital tool for unity, education, and identity. By safeguarding traditions like the Isukuti dance, she has preserved not only a performance art but also the history, values, and social cohesion of her community.
