Lawrance George Sagini
Dr. Lawrence George Sagini was recognized for his transformative and visionary leadership that helped shape the course of Kenya’s early independence journey. A trailblazer from the Gusii community, Dr. Sagini holds the distinction of being the first elected Kisii representative to the Legislative Council (LegCo) during the final stages of colonial rule. His entry into national politics marked a historic moment for his community, signaling a new era of political representation and influence.
As Kenya prepared for self-rule, Dr. Sagini was appointed as the country’s first African Minister for Education between 1962 and 1963. In this role, he laid a strong foundation for the education sector, advocating for increased access to education and the development of local capacity in preparation for independence. His policies reflected his deep belief in education as a tool for empowerment and nation-building.
In 1963, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kitutu West in Kenya’s first post-independence parliament.
