Lawrence Muchilwa

Lawrence Muchilwa, a Kenyan cybersecurity architect has turned Africa’s fast-growing tech scene into a training ground for world-class defenders. After sharpening his incident-response chops at Silensec; where he now heads information security for global clients, he co-founded CTFRoom, an online cyber-range whose gamified “capture-the-flag” contests walk professionals through live malware hunts and red-team exploits. The platform’s marquee event at DevCon has become a rite of passage for East African engineers and has logged more than 10,000 completed challenges since 2020.
Muchilwa’s community playbook stretches further: he launched BSides Nairobi to give grassroots researchers a stage, mentors rising talent through ADPList, and hosts the TruePositives podcast, translating threat intel and career advice into plain talk. His efforts earned him a spot in Business Daily’s Top 40 Under 40 Men (2023) and a recent nomination to the inaugural council of the government-backed Open University of Kenya, where he will help shape digital-security curricula for the next generation. Now building machine-learning labs inside CTFRoom and eyeing francophone expansion, Muchilwa is intent on proving that Africa can export cyber expertise as confidently as it imports apps because a secure digital economy, he argues, is the continent’s most valuable growth asset.
