Nuriya Sheikh Farah

Nuriya was recognized for her outstanding professionalism and transformative impact in the education sector, particularly in advancing the empowerment of girls in the North Eastern region of Kenya. Serving as the headmistress of North Eastern Province (NEP) Girls High School in Garissa between 1982 and 1990, she played a crucial role in creating a nurturing and academically focused environment that encouraged Somali girls to embrace education at a time when cultural and societal barriers often hindered their academic pursuits.

Her visionary leadership not only improved academic performance but also instilled confidence and ambition among her students, many of whom went on to excel in various professional fields. Notably, Nuriya broke barriers by becoming the first female from North Eastern Province to obtain a university degree, a milestone that served as a powerful source of inspiration for young girls in the region.

Through her dedication, she challenged deep-rooted stereotypes, promoted gender equality, and paved the way for greater female participation in education. Nuriya’s legacy continues to influence generations, proving that determination and education are vital tools for transforming communities and shaping a brighter, more inclusive future.
