Purity Karimi Gikunda
Purity Karimi Gikunda was recognized for her unwavering dedication to championing the right of teenage mothers to education, ensuring they are given a second chance to return to school and revive their academic dreams. Believing that motherhood should not mark the end of a girl’s education, she has worked tirelessly to break the cycle of stigma and exclusion that many young mothers face in society.
She co-founded the Greenland Group of Schools, a network of special secondary schools designed specifically for teenage mothers in Kenya. These institutions provide a safe and supportive environment where young mothers can pursue their studies while also caring for their babies. The schools are equipped to accommodate both mother and child, making education accessible without forcing students to choose between learning and parenting.
Currently, Greenland Group of Schools operates in Kajiado, Meru, Makueni, and Kilifi Counties, reaching communities where early pregnancies often disrupt education. Through her initiative, Purity has empowered countless girls to rebuild their lives, gain confidence, and work toward brighter futures. Her work stands as a beacon of hope, proving that with compassion, determination, and inclusive opportunities, the dreams of teenage mothers can be reignited and fulfilled.
