Richard Turere
Richard Turere is a Kenyan Maasai innovator renowned for developing the “Lion Lights” system at age 11 to protect livestock from predators without harming wildlife. His invention uses solar-powered, flashing LED lights to simulate human presence, deterring lions and other predators from approaching livestock enclosures. Lion Lights have been implemented in over 2,000 homes across Kenya and internationally, including in Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia, Argentina, and India.In 2023, Turere received the European Patent Office’s Young Inventors Prize for his contribution to sustainable human-wildlife coexistence . His work has inspired youth innovation and environmental stewardship, earning him recognition as a National Geographic Young Explorer and a finalist for the Future for Nature Award. Through his organization, Lion Lights, Turere continues to promote peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife.
