Ruth Mbiuki Kanyamu

Ruth was honoured for her unwavering contributions and tireless efforts in Kenya’s struggle for independence, demonstrating courage, selflessness, and deep commitment to the liberation cause. During one of the most challenging periods in the country’s history, she played a vital role in sustaining the morale and strength of the Mau Mau freedom fighters who had taken refuge in the forest.

Her involvement primarily centered on the critical task of providing food to the fighters, ensuring they had the nourishment necessary to endure the physically demanding conditions of guerrilla warfare. This was no simple act—supplying food required great personal risk, as it meant traveling long distances, often under the watchful eyes of colonial forces, and sometimes through dangerous, hostile terrain.

By delivering these essential supplies, Ruth not only supported the fighters’ physical needs but also gave them hope and a sense of solidarity from the communities they fought to protect. Her bravery and dedication ensured that those in the forest could continue resisting colonial rule.

Ruth’s contributions stand as a testament to the indispensable support roles played by women in the liberation struggle, proving that independence was won through both battlefield heroism and silent acts of sacrifice.
