Satwinder Singh Rupra
Dr. Satwinder Singh Rupra is a Kenyan cybersecurity scholar, auditor, and tech entrepreneur who has spent two decades fortifying the region’s digital infrastructure. One of the few Kenyans to hold a PhD in Information Technology Security and Audit (Kabarak University, 2021), he applies rigorous academic research to real-world risk management as founder and technical director of Sumo Computers in Kisumu. The firm secures banks, county governments, and SMEs through penetration testing, SIEM deployment, and ISO 27001 implementation, while its apprenticeship programme has mentored more than 120 local graduates into cybersecurity roles.
In parallel, he lectures at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, where he teaches network forensics, cloud-security governance, and IT audit. He chairs the university’s Cybersecurity Research Cluster, supervising master’s theses and leading donor-funded projects that develop open-source threat-intelligence tools for small enterprises. His peer-reviewed papers on privacy gaps in personal cloud storage and zero-trust frameworks for African public clouds are frequently cited in regional policy briefs.
A Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, Rupra consults for the Kenya ICT Authority on national cloud-security standards and speaks at the annual Kenya Cybersecurity Conference. Driven by the mantra “secure locally, compete globally,” he continues to blend scholarship, entrepreneurship, and public service to build a resilient digital future for Kenya.
