Simon N. Mitambo
Simon, a respected cultural expert and community leader, was being feted for his outstanding role in preserving and promoting cultural values and practices among the Tharaka people. In 2013, he founded the Society for Alternative Learning and Transformation (SALT), an organization dedicated to revitalizing indigenous knowledge systems and safeguarding traditional heritage. Through SALT, Simon has championed the promotion of African values and the unique Tharaka culture, particularly the concept of Kithino—a traditional governance and social system that embodies wisdom, justice, and community cohesion.
His efforts have helped instill a strong sense of cultural identity among the Tharaka, encouraging self-governance rooted in ancestral principles while aligning with broader national values. Simon’s programs emphasize intergenerational learning, where elders share knowledge and practices with the youth, ensuring continuity and relevance in the modern context.
Beyond preservation, his initiative has fostered unity, pride, and resilience within the community, while also contributing to Kenya’s diverse cultural mosaic. By documenting traditions, hosting cultural events, and engaging with educational institutions, Simon has ensured that Kithino remains not only a symbol of heritage but also a living practice that strengthens both local governance and cultural pride.
