Stephen Kihuni Wachira was honoured for his outstanding dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable forestry management. As the Director of Kihuwa Forestry Ventures, he has demonstrated visionary leadership in promoting large-scale reforestation and environmental restoration projects across Kenya. His unwavering commitment to greening the country has made a lasting impact on both ecosystems and communities.
For the past 17 years, Stephen has partnered with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in Nanyuki through the Environmental Soldier Programme, an initiative that integrates environmental conservation into military and community service. Under his guidance, thousands of trees have been planted on military bases and surrounding lands, transforming previously degraded areas into thriving green spaces.
Beyond tree planting, Stephen’s work emphasizes sustainable forestry practices, community participation, and environmental education. Through Kihuwa Forestry Ventures, he has provided seedlings, training, and technical expertise to local farmers and institutions, encouraging responsible land use and climate resilience.
His collaborative model linking private enterprise, public institutions, and the military showcases how partnerships can accelerate national reforestation goals. Stephen’s lifelong dedication to nurturing Kenya’s forests continues to inspire others to take responsibility for protecting the planet for future generations.
