Stephen Waweru

Stephen is celebrated for his remarkable contribution to community development through sports, particularly within the deaf community. He is a founder member and leader of Planet Deaf Football, an initiative based in Kibera that has transformed lives since its inception in 2002. With a passion for inclusion and empowerment, Stephen has dedicated over two decades to creating opportunities for deaf individuals to participate actively in football.

Through Planet Deaf Football, he has not only provided a platform for sporting excellence but also promoted teamwork, self-confidence, and social integration among deaf players. His vision goes beyond playing the game — he has been instrumental in mentoring and inspiring deaf individuals to form new football clubs across Kenya, thereby expanding opportunities for participation and competition.

Stephen’s initiative has also served as a bridge between the deaf community and the wider society, challenging stereotypes and promoting understanding through sports. His leadership has resulted in the growth of a vibrant network of deaf football teams, some of which have gone on to compete in national and international tournaments. Stephen’s unwavering commitment has made him a key figure in using sport as a tool for inclusion, empowerment, and community transformation.
