Dr. Thomas Mbithi Musili
Dr. Thomas Mbithi Musili was honoured for his outstanding commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable waste management through his pioneering work in electronic waste recycling. As the founder of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre—one of Africa’s largest and most advanced e-waste management facilities—he has played a transformative role in addressing one of the continent’s fastest-growing environmental challenges. His visionary leadership has led to the safe collection, dismantling, and recycling of more than 10,000 tons of e-waste, significantly reducing the release of toxic substances into the environment and protecting both ecosystems and human health.
Beyond waste management, Dr. Musili has made remarkable strides in youth empowerment and green entrepreneurship. Through specialized training programs at the WEEE Centre, he has equipped over 6,000 young people with practical skills in e-waste handling, repair, and recycling, creating sustainable employment opportunities and fostering innovation within the circular economy. His initiatives have also enhanced public awareness on the importance of responsible e-waste disposal and digital sustainability.
Dr. Musili’s work continues to position Kenya as a continental leader in environmental protection and sustainable development, exemplifying how innovation and responsibility can coexist to safeguard the planet for future generations.
