Timothy Wambu
Timothy Wambu is a Kenyan equity-markets strategist who heads Equity Research at Absa Bank Kenya, steering coverage of listed companies across East Africa for the bank’s institutional, wealth-management, and retail desks. A CFA charter-holder with a BCom in Finance from the University of Nairobi, he began his career as a macro-analyst at Genghis Capital before joining Absa (then Barclays) in 2014.
Wambu now leads a Nairobi and Johannesburg-based team that produces more than 120 company notes and quarterly macro briefs each year, influencing allocation decisions for assets under management exceeding KES 300 billion. His sector deep dives on banking, telcos, and fast-moving consumer goods are staples for offshore investors seeking frontier-market alpha, and his 2023 call on Safaricom’s post-Ethiopia rebound outperformed the NSE 20 by 18 percentage points.
A sought-after commentator, Wambu briefs the National Treasury’s Debt Management Office on investor sentiment, appears regularly on Bloomberg and CNBC Africa, and addresses forums such as the Rotary Club of Nairobi and the East Africa Pension Funds Summit. He mentors young analysts through the CFA Society Kenya and co-lectures an applied valuation course at Strathmore Business School.
Passionate about financial literacy, he runs “Market Monday,” a weekly LinkedIn newsletter demystifying equities for first-time investors, underscoring his commitment to deepening Kenya’s capital-market sophistication.
