Veronica Thamaini
Veronica Thamani is a Kenyan program strategist and the Regional Programmes Manager at the Wikimedia Foundation, where she leads initiatives that support knowledge equity and open access across Sub-Saharan Africa. With a strong background in community development, education, and digital inclusion, Veronica plays a pivotal role in designing and executing programs that empower local communities to contribute to and access free knowledge on platforms like Wikipedia.
Her work focuses on building sustainable, locally driven Wikimedia communities by supporting capacity-building, partnerships, and inclusive content creation in underserved regions. Through her leadership, the Foundation has expanded its regional footprint, bridging language gaps, supporting indigenous knowledge preservation, and fostering collaboration among educators, technologists, and cultural institutions.
Veronica is also passionate about ensuring that African narratives are written by Africans and that knowledge systems from the continent are represented with depth and dignity in the global digital commons. She champions programs that prioritize gender equity, youth engagement, and grassroots innovation as core to the movement’s future. As she continues to scale Wikimedia’s impact in the region, Veronica remains focused on one clear goal: making knowledge a tool for empowerment, visibility, and long-term systemic change across Africa.
