Victoria Simiyu
Dr. Victoria is a pioneering Kenyan transplant anesthesiologist based at Kenyatta National Hospital, where she plays a critical role in one of the most complex and high-stakes areas of surgical care. As one of only two formally trained transplant anesthesiologists in the country, her expertise is vital to Kenya’s growing capacity for organ transplantation, particularly kidney and liver procedures, where precision, timing, and patient stability are paramount.
At Kenyatta National Hospital, she manages perioperative care for transplant patients, coordinating closely with surgical teams to ensure safe anesthesia delivery and optimal outcomes. Her role demands both deep clinical skill and split-second decision-making, especially given the intricate physiology of organ failure and the sensitive dynamics of donor-recipient procedures. In a field with limited local specialization, her presence is not just rare, it’s indispensable.
Beyond the operating room, she is also contributing to the long-term development of transplant services in Kenya. She is also actively involved in knowledge sharing, mentoring junior anesthesiologists, and advocating for the expansion of transplant care infrastructure. Her work represents both technical excellence and national impact, ensuring that lifesaving procedures become more accessible to Kenyans who need them most, and helping build a resilient healthcare system equipped for advanced care.
