Vincent Ongera Onsomu
Vincent was honoured for his outstanding contribution to Kenyan rugby, a sport to which he has dedicated over two decades of excellence, leadership, and mentorship. As a key member of the Kenya Simbas from 2003 to 2013, he earned an impressive twenty-five (25) international caps, representing the nation with distinction. His skill, determination, and teamwork were pivotal in Kenya’s triumphs in major tournaments, including the Elgon Cup (2008–2011), Victoria Cup (2010), and the Africa Rugby Cup (2011), achievements that solidified Kenya’s reputation on the continental rugby stage.
At the club level, Vincent was a standout performer with the Kenya Harlequins, where he was crowned Kenya Cup Top Try Scorer and Player of the Year (2010). His club career was decorated with five Kenya Cup titles, three Enterprise Cups, and six Rugby Super Series championships, marking him as one of the most accomplished players in Kenya’s rugby history.
In 2004, while studying at Strathmore University, Vincent played a crucial role in reviving and leading the university’s rugby team, laying the foundation for the now renowned Strathmore Leos. His legacy continues to inspire generations of rugby players across Kenya and beyond.
