Wanjiru Ndegwa-Njuguna

Dr. Wanjiru Ndegwa-Njuguna is a Kenyan reproductive-medicine specialist who founded Footsteps to Fertility Centre in Nairobi in 2015—the first in-vitro-fertilisation clinic in Kenya wholly owned and led by a woman physician. Holding an MMed in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the University of Nairobi and a subspecialty fellowship in Reproductive Medicine from KU Leuven, Belgium, she set out to offer evidence-based, culturally sensitive care to couples facing infertility.

Today the centre occupies a purpose-built facility in Karen with two IVF theatres, a cryobank, and Kenya’s first time-lapse embryo-monitoring laboratory. Services span natural-cycle tracking, IUI, IVF/ICSI, pre-implantation genetic testing, fertility preservation for cancer patients, and male-factor microsurgery. Cumulative live-birth rates top 54 percent per cycle set, on par with leading global programmes, while an income-tiered pricing model and annual “Low-Cost IVF Week” make treatment accessible to lower-income families.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Ndegwa-Njuguna chairs the Kenya Fertility Society’s education committee, co-authors Ministry of Health ART guidelines, and trains resident doctors through an accredited fellowship she launched in 2022. She hosts the “Footsteps” podcast, tackling myths and stigma around infertility, and runs virtual support groups reaching 3,000 women across East Africa. Honoured by Business Daily among Kenya’s Top 40 Under 40 Women in 2024, she continues to champion holistic, affordable pathways to parenthood.
