Wilfred A. Mutubwa

Dr Wilfred A. Mutubwa, OGW, LL.D, C.Arb, FCIArb, was a Kenyan arbitration luminary whose career shaped the practice of commercial dispute resolution across Africa. After earning his LL.B from the University of Nairobi and an LL.M from Queen Mary University of London, he completed a doctorate in international investment arbitration at Strathmore University. He founded Dr Mutubwa Law Advocates, handling high-value energy, construction, and shareholder disputes before the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the ICC International Court of Arbitration, and the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration (NCIA).

From 2021 to 2023 he chaired the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators–Kenya Branch, modernising its training curriculum and doubling membership to more than 1,800 practitioners. He was subsequently appointed to CIArb’s global Board of Management, the first Kenyan to hold the post, and sat on rosters for the LCIA, Mauritius International Arbitration Centre, Kigali International Arbitration Centre, and the COMESA Court of Justice.

Decorated with the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) by Kenya’s president in 2022, Dr Mutubwa lectured at Strathmore Law School and authored seminal texts, including African Perspectives on Investment Arbitration (2024). Passionate about capacity-building, he mentored over 400 young lawyers through the Africa Arbitration Academy, leaving an enduring legacy of ethical, Africa-centred dispute resolution.
